Brubaker and Fraction were planning to kill off Bucky. I noticed something. If you go and read all of the Brubaker run which of course includes Bucky's run as Cap, every story means something and it sort of pushes him in this direction where, really this interpretation had already reached the enlightenment that all story characters do. Had he stayed around I think it would cheapen the amazing stories we've seen and anything after Fear Itself wouldn't be as good. Though since we won't (at least right now) get the chance to find out, who knows? I mean it IS Ed Brubaker. By that same token though, he has said to the fans to 'trust us.' So maybe they'll surprise us.
For me, Steve was Cap in the 40s and when he first woke up but when he gets too used to the present (And I get it at some point he should since he has been there so long) it loses a bit of it's flavor for me. I see him using a cel phone and an art tablet at one point. WHAT?! It may make sense but make mine the Cap that doesn't know much about the present. In a way Bucky had that cause even though he was unfrozen throughout history he really didn't get to live it so he still, in a way had an updated version of the 'man out of time' idea.
Brubaker's new Cap is great and, as always he makes Steve still very believable with the 'old soldier' routine and all of the flashbacks. But, his return in Fear...well, it felt like he was in a book that was supposed to star someone else. Bucky's duration as Cap ending there was cool for me since he went out, not as Bucky Cap, but as Captain America defending our nation's capital with his best allies at his side. I have no problem with the death, just where they did it. Fear Itself is really awful and the only entertaining part was Bucky showing up.
Bucky is actually my favorite Marvel character and I have to recommend to anyone who reads this, if you haven't read it yet, read Captain America and Bucky # 620. Brubaker still has so much to tell with the character and, to me, he isn't dead when he's got more story to tell. Even if there wasn't, the character won't die for me cause those stories were so good and had so much depth and meaning.
The issue in itself is actually a great starting point too if anyone wants to start with this character but doesn't know where to start currently.
ahaha thanks for taking the time to write all of this! And yes, Captain America and Bucky 620 was the most beautiful thing ever. I reread it out loud so many times by now!
It's pretty obvious that Bucky as Cap is definitely not a permanent thing, but I really wished that he'd gotten more stories of his own, you know, his own CAPTAIN AMERICA adventures (as opposed to BUCKY-CAP adventures which involved basically his past and Steve etc I DON'T KNOW HOW TO EXPLAIN BUT I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?). And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'm most pissed off about how he died: it was a cheap shock tactic and nothing else.
And yes I'm on tumblr too and I've followed that sinnnceeeeee WELL the first few days I started? I SPAM A LOT OF THE BUCKY BARNES TAG :/
Wow! you're awesome! I'm glad I'm finding more people who have as much love for this character as I do. I'm working on a Bucky cosplay for next summer. I'm thinking a mix of the film and the comic version. I love what Brubaker is doing with Cap and Bucky because he has already written so much of a continuity for both Cap and Bucky that makes it feel more defined and more 'This is what happens in their life story time line' Than other writers have.
I think there is a lot to tell from their WWII days but it is so cool that we got glimpses of their War days in flashbacks but now after writing so much with Bucky here, he gets to go back and write a definitive timeline for them back then. As much as we know it is the same character, with the background being so different it almost feels like a different character with a different continuity and you could sit and wonder 'what will happen next?' despite the fact that we do know.
As I've said the character for me will never die and especially not here because there is so much more to tell. This character has so many facets and really, this is the true Bucky since Bucky was the WWII hero so I feel like it's almost like we're just starting his story. Makes me so excited just thinking about it. Bucky is just so damn cool. His story is set up in so many layers too that if you wanted to stop with certain parts (Tho why would you want to right?) you could. If you wanna stop with WWII it's seamless, if you wanna stop with Winter soldier you can or if you wanna stop with him as Bucky Cap. This character is getting such a carefully crafted story and timeline. And he's such a tragic character too. Such a flawed and controversial present lifetime despite him being a true hero thru and thru. Sorry, I'm ranting and my grammar is horrible here cause I am so excited. I'm totally adding you to my watch list if I haven't already.
I'm very happy to find another Bucky fan too! It's moments like this I really just love the Internet *^* I'd love to see your Bucky cosplay! I've always wanted to do one (well, Rule63!Bucky) but because I have no luck/talent in cosplay all I've managed to do is ''an outfit inspired by Bucky'', which I did when I went to watch Cap!
You are very welcome for the watch. I was actually discussing the cosplay with my friend who will be working on it today. I hope I can pull it off but what makes me really excited about it is that it is not only a character I love and I'll be, in a way paying tribute to but since I want to alter it a bit I'll be able to make it mine. I'm really thinking the comic version meets the film version. The coat from the film looked so good but I want to add to it, maybe make the coat longer so as to get the significant area of blue around the waist but lol not to make it look so much like Buck is wearing the world's biggest diaper LOL
Do you have a facebook or myspace or any kind of social network account? Of course no worries if you didn't or didn't want to share but if you want send me a note.
I hope too that I can find more hardcore Bucky fans on the net like here on DA. Hmmm maybe you would know is there maybe a fan group on here for him? If not there totally should be XD
I know there is a DA group called FansForCap but I mostly meet other Bucky fans through tumblr! My handle there is the same (haeresitic) but I think I'm a bit annoying to follow on tumblr hahaha so if you don't want to follow me I thoroughly understand!
I loved the coat from the movie too! I actually ran around my country (I live in Singapore so it's pretty easy to run around it!) trying to find a decent copy but I couldn't (at least with my budget) I wish you the best of luck with it!
tumblr is basically a black hole that will suck your life and soul ahaha. it's at its most basic form just a blog, but like twitter, you can follow other people and other people can follow you. You can also track tags of your interests! Finally, you can reblog stuff that you like and basically connect and network with other people who share your same interests!
I'm like >:/ also seriously, why!?! AUGHHH! Hate you Marvel!
But that pic is seriously accurate as to how Thor, Steve and Clint reacted to Bucky. Tony practically convinced him to be Cap, Thor was all "Who is this guy? I don't know him" and Clint was just an ass about it (suddenly Cap's original lil bro comes back and Clint who is also like Cap's lil bro was probably jelly).
Thankyou so much! And I'm so happy that lately I've been meeting a lot of Bucky fans here (because I thought that between the people angry about the DC reboot and the people pleased Steve's coming back to the uniform there were like very few people who cared about what happened at all :/)
Clint and Bucky! I just wanted to get them right the most. aaa I have a lot of theories on their friendship, mostly based on how Clint and Steve liked to clash in their early days as Avengers with Steve finally helping Clint to be the hero he could always be, and I like to think that Clint and Bucky would have the same dynamics now--well. If you know, he didn't--die ::sobs::
In one of Fraction's interviews I was told he was laughing when he was asked about fan reaction of Bucky. THis might be blind optimism but I have a feeling will see Bucky again in the pages of Captain America and Bucky.
